5 Things Holding You Back From Creating Your First Course

  • Megan

Creating an online course is technically something that anybody could do and if you think you know something that could help other people, I highly recommend that you do too.

However, it’s not always as easy as other people make it look. A lot of the time, we get in our own way and hold ourselves back.

Below are 5 of the most common things I come across quite regularly that can end up stalling your progress and preventing you from hitting your goals of one day joining the course creation industry.

  1. Waiting to Feel Ready

A lot of the time, people sit on really great ideas until the ‘timing is right’. Here’s a secret: the timing is rarely ever right. You aren’t going to wake up one morning with sudden clarity and motivation to get going. Clarity (much like motivation) comes from doing, not waiting.

  2. Trying to Make It Perfect First Time

This is a biggie because lots of us are perfectionists. ESPECIALLY when we are being vulnerable because let’s face it, pouring your heart and soul into something and then releasing it out into the world is scary as fuck.

Of course we’d want to make sure it’s perfect. But, the truth is, if you polish forever, you’ll never hit publish. Your first go is supposed to be a bit rough around the edges.

  3. Overcomplicating the Tech

I’ve met people with bigger tech stacks than me and they haven’t even started yet. Keep it as simple as possible, before you know it, you’ll have spent a year learning how to use all of the tech and not made any progress on your course.

  4. Not Knowing Who It’s For

“But it could help everyone” is a line I’ve heard more times than I can count. If you don’t know who you’re helping, your course will sound like it’s for no one. You want to speak directly to your target audience so you can help solve their specific pain points.

  5. Comparing Yourself to People 10 Steps Ahead

We all do this, even those of us who know we shouldn’t. But let’s face it, scrolling through your phone looking at people in their Chapter 10 isn’t the benchmark for your Chapter 1.

By all means scroll, watch, learn. They are leading the way. But never compare.

If you can avoid making these 5 mistakes, you’ll be far closer to launching your first online course than most people ever get.
